Christ UMC is a vibrant, growing community of faith situated in the Southern Village neighborhood in Southwest Chapel Hill. Since coming out of the pandemic, our children and youth ministry has continued to grow and flourish with new families moving into the area and making this their church home. The Director of Children and Youth Ministry prioritizes the formation of children and youth in every aspect of their work, from planning events to mapping curriculum for Sunday mornings (children) and evenings (youth). They work closely with parents and guardians both in terms of communication and planning as well as in the development of servants to help support their ministry. They will be highly motivated, organized, efficient, and detail-oriented as they work together with laity to serve in ministry together. The Director of Children and Youth Ministries is part of the church ministry staff team and collaborates with other staff members, clergy, and lay members to further the work of God here in Southern Village and beyond. *Christ UMC is open to one full time person who will do both children and youth ministry or two part time persons who will each do either children or youth ministry. Applicants with interest in either area are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement engaging and age-appropriate curriculum for formational opportunities (Sundays and beyond) and other activities.
  • Coordinate and oversee events, including Vacation Bible School, activities, holiday programs, mission trips (youth) and retreats (youth).
  • Recruit, train, and support servants to serve in various aspects of children and/or youth ministry.
  • Provide pastoral care and support to students and their families, fostering a nurturing and welcoming environment.
  • Collaborate with the pastoral team to integrate children and youth into the overall life and mission of the church community.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for children and youth, adhering to all relevant child protection policies and procedures (Safe Sanctuaries).

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, with coursework in childhood education, theology, or related fields.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with children, youth, parents, volunteers, and church staff.
  • Strong administrative skills, with the ability to manage a budget, attention to detail, and effective and thorough planning skills.
  • Basic knowledge of childhood development, including an understanding of the cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of children and youth.
  • Familiarity with theology in the Wesleyan tradition, with a commitment to incorporating Wesleyan principles into children's ministry programming.
  • Previous experience in children and/or youth ministry or related fields is desirable but not required.
