Family Ministry Associate – Bloomington, IL


Position Description:

St. John's Lutheran Church in Bloomington, IL, seeks a Family Ministry Associate. The Family Ministry Associate position is designed to be an integral part of our family ministry team; implementing transformational ministry programs for children 2 years of age through high school that are designed to give children and youth spirit filled opportunities to worship, love, grow and give as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in coordination with our Director of Family and Adult Discipleship, Family Ministry Coordinator and Senior Pastor. The Family Ministry Associate will work with the family ministry team to plan, implement and organize regular, creative and relevant opportunities for children and youth to grow in their faith; including, but not limited to: Sunday Morning programs, Vacation Bible School, Thrive and Confirmation Jr. High ministry, camps and mission trips, graduation celebration, stepping stove events, service opportunities and student and family fellowship event.

Position Qualifications:

  • A passion for children and youth and interest in their spiritual growth and development.
  • Relevant experience with program management and volunteer leadership. A plus if in a ministry setting.
  • High School diploma with some college credit or degree preferred.
  • Flexible schedule requiring Sunday morning, Wednesday evening program hours and regular weekday office hours.
  • Spiritual Maturity: A follower of Jesus Christ who strives to make prayer and Bible reading a regular part of life.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Establishes good working relationships with all; works well with people at all levels of the congregation; builds appropriate rapport; considers the impact of his/her actions on others; uses diplomacy and tact; is approachable; avoids communication triangles.
  • Initiative: Is action oriented and energetic about creating new and worthwhile activities to accomplish ministry goals; identifies and seizes opportunities; sets demanding but achievable objectives for self and others.
  • Verbal/Written communication: Is able to speak and write clearly, articulating messages in a tone appropriate to the context and through the medium best suited to the audience.
  • Project management: Identifies the key objectives and scope of a proposed project; garners needed resources and support, develops a realistic and thorough plan for achieving key objectives; communicates with team members; implements action plans; identifies and resolves barriers and problems.
  • People/Volunteer Management: Provides direction, gains commitment, facilitates change and achieves results through the efficient, creative and responsible deployment of volunteers; engages people in their areas of giftedness and passion.
  • Compassion and Care: Exudes a natural sense of care for the well-being of others and responds with empathy; communicates a sense of support in her/his presence while demonstrating appropriate boundaries.
  • Integrity and Trust: Is seen as trustworthy by others; practices direct, honest and transparent communication; keeps confidences; responds to situations with constancy and reliability.
