Pasadena Community United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, FL, is searching for their next Director of Children & Family Ministries who will provide leadership and strategic vision, and act as key communicator for our Children and Family Ministries. This includes developing, implementing, and executing ministries, providing direction to ministry staff and volunteers, working directly with the Children’s Ministry Council, and shepherding children from birth through fifth grade while offering discipleship essentials for families. This position is a visible and regular presence on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, and for all children and family ministries. Reports to: Associate Pastor Essential Responsibilities:
  • Be the “face” of PCC’s Children and Family Ministry. Build a positive relationship with the congregation and community so that he/she can create, sustain, and expand support for the ministry.
  • Build and empower effective volunteer teams, adult and youth, at all levels of children and family ministries. Resource leaders with engaging curriculum and ongoing support and training.
  • Cast the PCC vision for children and family ministry within the church and wider community. Find new and creative ways to share the story and impact of our ministry, and create pathways for new families and volunteers to join and engage.
  • Design intentional ministry with parents, guardians, and caregivers. Build small groups where these can find mutual support, and provide resources to help prompt faith conversations at home.
  • Work with the Directors of Youth and Preschool and their teams to create strategies to help families/children transition between life stages.
  • Build and strengthen the bridge between the preschool and children’s ministries.
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the ministry budget, communications, and relationships with other ministry departments.
  • Prepare and maintain ministry webpage and Facebook group, including the submission of event information for social media and church communications.
  • Provide a safe environment for children and youth by adhering to and enforcing our Child and Youth Protection Policy. This includes making sure that all volunteers working with the children/youth have up to date background checks and the required annual training on the policy
  • Lead Children’s Ministry Council, serve on Preschool Ministry Council, attend weekly staff and monthly director meetings, and worship meetings as needed.
  • Plan, organize, and implement weekly Sunday School and Wednesday night ministries. This includes selecting curriculum, scheduling, overseeing and supporting volunteers, preparing lessons and activities, serving in the classroom, offering the Children’s Moment in worship (as needed), and timely communication with families.
  • Manage the training and scheduling of acolytes for Sunday worship.
  • Coordinate Children’s Choirs with Director of Traditional Worship
  • Coordinate First Friday events for 5th graders in preparation for their transition to youth ministry.
  • Plan and provide mission opportunities for children and families.
  • Offer ongoing learning opportunities for families to become more connected inwardly, and outwardly.
  • Offer ongoing practical “how to” classes for raising children and youth.
  • Plan, organize, and manage the major ministry events that we implement as a team for families in our church and broader community (Easter, VBS, Trunk or Treat, Christmas, etc.).
  • Seek out and create intergenerational opportunities for fellowship and outreach to families in our community.
  • Provide events and activities that support and extend the church worship series.

Position Qualifications:

  • Manifest a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, a strong commitment to the Christian faith, and be supportive of United Methodist doctrines, polity, and theological traditions.
  • Education and experience requirements: Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Christian Education or Education or Bachelor’s degree and training and experience in the field of Christian Education or Bachelor’s degree and training and experience in a field focused on children and family
  • Quick starter with entrepreneurial and organizational skills for identifying and developing new ministries with children and their families.
  • Exhibit strong skills for planning, organization, administration, motivation, supervision, and leadership of children, families, and volunteer staff.
  • Consistently interact with staff, congregation, and community with a servant’s attitude, cooperative spirit, genuine warmth, and hospitality.
  • Commitment to and readiness to share in fulfilling the vision and mission of PCC and support the church’s strategic plan at all levels.
  • Must successfully pass criminal background check.
