Children & Youth Ministry Worker – Anniston, AL


Position Description:

The Children & Youth Ministry Worker at St Mark United Methodist Church in Anniston, AL, should be a believer in Jesus Christ, committed to teach children of God’s love and grace through scripture and the historic traditions of the church. The C/YMW is a person of genuine and deepening Christian character, and should possess interpersonal, administrative, and organizational skills. The C/YMW, under the direct supervision of the pastor, will develop lessons and activities for children and youth during a given week at separate times for ministry. This position requires a worker willing to be committed to creative ways of ministry and caring for the children, youth, volunteers and the families. St Mark United Methodist Church wants to grow numerically and spiritually. The strategy is to provide consistent and experienced leadership in children’s ministry to disciple the children who currently attend, and to invite, teach and serve children/youth and their families from the community - to start and grow a children and youth ministry. In conformity with St Mark’s policies and procedures, as well as those contained in the United Methodist Book of Discipline, the position responsibilities will include those generally described below, but may not be limited to:
  • Foster safe, inviting and engaging ministry environments for children and youth year-round on Sunday mornings, Thursday evenings (during worship), and other times when ministry or church-wide events occur.
  • In consultation with pastor and ministry volunteers, create and prepare weekly lessons and activities for children and train volunteers to assist on Sunday mornings in Sunday school, in Children's Church after Children’s Moment during Sunday morning worship, and during Thursday night worship. Additionally, create and prepare weekly lessons and activities for youth and train volunteers to assist on particular times of ministry devoted to middle-school and high school children. An outside Christian curriculum can be appropriate.
  • Engage AND develop strategies to reach children/youth and their parents through personal contact at local area schools (in cooperation with school), the Cub packs and Boy Scout troops meeting at St Mark weekly and the preschool operating daily at St Mark.
  • Develop timely and effective follow up tools for guests and new members - particularly families with children.
  • Advertising, communicating and promoting children’s ministry offered at St Mark and larger community through various forms including social media.
  • Prepare and follow an annual budget for children and youth ministries in addition to maintaining and ordering supplies and equipment for ministry use.
  • Stringently maintaining the Safe Sanctuary policies in place at St Mark. Attend the Education Committee, general staff, and Church Council meetings.
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree and having experience working with children and youth in a church or school setting.
  • Must be a person of deep personal Christian faith, integrity, and biblical knowledge as a follower of Christ.
  • Comfortable with racial and cultural diversities.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Leadership skills & positive and servant-like attitude
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, and to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Computer proficient
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and practice discretion in all communications.
  • Experience in scouting is a plus.
