The Director of Youth Ministries will be first and foremost responsible for building and maintaining a program that will help lead the youth of Lakewood UMC to a relationship with Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and help the youth of Lakewood UMC maintain that relationship by growing their Christian faith through the variety of weekly and annual programs and retreats. More importantly the Director of Youth Ministries will help facilitate a growing relationship between the students and Christion adults so that the youth are challenged and encouraged to grow as followers of Christ.
The Director of Youth Ministries should support the teachings of the United Methodist Church as outlined in the Book of Discipline as well as assure compliance with the Book of Discipline, the Legal Resource Manual and the United Methodist Church in all business transactions.
The Director of Youth Ministries will be responsible for planning and executing the following:
- Choir Tour/ Mission Trip
- Winter Retreat
- Retreats for Seniors
- Summer Activities including Youth Week
- Sunday night UMYF- The most regular and important meeting of the week. This is both an entry point for new youth and also an opportunity for spiritual growth for older youth. The programming will be scripturally based and include discussion, teaching, recreation, and experiential elements.
Bible Study- Develop a weekly after school bible study
- Wednesday Night- Developing “lighter” programming for youth while adults have their own programs.
- Sunday School- Coordinate volunteers to teach Sunday school and work with them in choosing curriculum.
- Miscellaneous- this includes taking youth to other events and service opportunities as well as investing time in attending occasional outside activities that youth participate such as sports, concerts, and other extracurricular events.
- Budget- Responsible for building and maintaining a budget that covers the costs of Sunday night activities, retreats, choir tour and other areas where costs are incurred.
- Communication- Keep parents, youth, and counselors up to date on upcoming programs, retreats, an any other noteworthy activities through newsletters, meetings, and social media.
- Leadership Development- Develop and encourage both adult volunteers and youth to find areas in the youth ministry where they can better utilize their unique gifts, lead programming, and develop a better sense of connection with the ministry and vision for the group.
- Educational Development- On a personal level, spend time reading, researching, and studying, various theological and resource oriented ideas to continually grow learn and develop as a leader and Christian.
First United Methodist Church of Lakeland, Florida, a vital and active congregation, with an average attendance of about 1,600 and a staff of about 115, is searching for a full time Director of Youth and College Age Ministries. Our Youth Ministries area is a growing ministry and is housed in and shares a ministry center with other youth/young adult vital ministries including our weekday Neighborhood Ministries which include an after-school and all day summer ministry, along with an active scouting program. This position is an important part of the GROW (Age Level) team of staff and volunteers. The qualified Youth Director will be a mature Christian with a calling and passion to minister to youth in relatable and authentic ways. The Youth Director is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of age appropriate youth ministry programs providing spiritual growth through worship, discipleship, mission, outreach, and leadership development. She or He must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills as well as a strong knowledge of current multi-media and social media formats.
